Grief as an Altered State: Understanding the Psychological, Neurological, and Existential Impact

Grief is an altered state of consciousness, a profound disruption of an individual’s perception of reality, time, and identity. Our understanding of our own existence develops in relationship with our connections and attachments, and the loss of a significant attachment challenges the brain’s ability to orient itself within a familiar framework of existence. This loss can create a psychological disequilibrium, in which individuals experience disorientation, emotional distress, and difficulties integrating the loss into their sense of self. Grief is one of the very lowest vibrational states of existence while love is one of the highest vibrations. When experiencing a loss, individuals must reconcile a new existence somewhere between these two vibrational states that allows for the coexistence of love and loss. Healing comes not from erasing grief, but from learning to exist in the dialectical space between love and loss, developing a new definition of self.

The Subtleties of Trauma Spectrum Disorders and Helping America’s Returning Warriors Regain their Mastery and Control with Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy

Indeed, an estimated 10-20 percent of returning soldiers will have PTSD. What about the other 80-90 percent? What are their experiences and are those experiences clinically relevant or indicative of psychosocial problems? By using intimate stories drawn from real cases and COL Yarvis’ own war-time experiences, we will explore the challenges associated with caring for warriors and their families. Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy is presented as an intimate, yet potent evidenced-based therapy that can outperform and/or deepen the impact of other evidenced-based trauma-informed interventions.
